Light Rail Transport (Transport Policy Board)

The Light Rail Transport Special Interest Group (SIG) is intended to provide a forum for those practitioners required to carry out work in this area, to exchange experience, promote best practice and raise questions/problems which others within the SIG might be able to help.

The main issues which currently may require a sharing of knowledge are:

  1. How to deal with the escalating costs arising from the private sector bearing most of the risk. Or is there a balance to be achieved between public and private sectors on risk share?

  2. The technical aspects of light rail systems; there are important issues of standards across different schemes e.g. vehicle types, track construction, safety issues and stop design to name just a few.

  3. The issues surrounding modal shift and the comparisons between light rail and other modes such as heavy rail or segregated busways

Members may wish to exchange knowledge on these and other areas to assist in the future development of light rail schemes.

This site offers the opportunity to share views, ideas and experiences in identifying these. It is intended to provide a forum for those practitioners required to carry out work in this area, to exchange experience, promote best practice and raise questions/problems which others within the SIG might be able to help.
