An effective transport system is vital for economic well-being and the quality of life. There is now general recognition that the forecast upward trend in road traffic will be environmentally or socially damaging. The need is to find transport policies for the UK and Europe, which will be sustainable in the long term. Avoiding serious environmental damage, while preserving the access people want for their livelihoods and for leisure, requires a fundamentally different approach to transport policy and a radical modification of recent trends.
Chapters cover: The growing demand for road transport; environmental and social effects of road transport; sustainability; the Institutional framework for transport policy; strategies for mitigating environmental impacts; and draws some conclusions.
