Improving Walkability is good practice guidance on improving pedestrian conditions as part of development opportunities. Published by Transport for London (September 2005), it offers advice on how to improve conditions for walking and the public realm and is illustrated with examples of best practice and case studies.
The guidance follows on from Transport for London ‘s Walking Plan for London (2004) which was developed to support stakeholders in helping to achieve the Mayor of London’s objective of making the Capital one of the world’s most walking-friendly cities by 2015.
The key points made in Improving Walkability are:
- Walking brings many individual and community benefits
- Good quality provision encourages walking and adds value to developments
- The planning system has a major role to play in identifying and delivering improved walking conditions

- More journeys being made either fully, or in part, on foot
- Greater use of public transport
- Healthier lifestyles
- Better social inclusion
- A cleaner environments and a more attractive public realm
