Attention is now focusing on how to provide long life roads with the need for only minimal maintenance. Over recent years there have been significant advances in new material technologies and there is a general move away from method specifications to performance specifications. There are thus new materials on the market and commercial pressures to use them.
This paper sets out in tabular form the views obtained from a consultation process throughout the industry, the associated professions, local government and the universities and research organisations. It compares the research work, which is in progress against the feedback from the consultation exercise and hence identifies those areas where further work may be needed. These areas are then discussed in further detail.
