Traditional textbooks on roadway designs focus on fundamental alignment elements and
design criteria. When applying these in practice, engineers must try various design
combinations, check whether the resulting alignments satisfy requirements, and evaluate
their relative effectiveness.
Introducing a systematic and efficient approach to optimize alignments, this essentially
practical text emphasizes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) in extensively automated highway design. Based on a series
of research projects, it provides a thorough introduction to the mathematical models and
solution algorithms for optimizing highway alignments, including horizontal, vertical,
and threedimensional alignments.
The text is ideally suited to senior undergraduate or graduate students majoring in civil
engineering or transportation management. Practicing highway design and
transportation engineers will also find it of interest.

English Heritage has recently published Streets for All, regional guidance manuals aimed at anyone involved in the design, management or conservation of streets. The manuals, endorsed by the Department for Transport, emphasise the need to retain local distinctiveness and avoid standard solutions. Copies are available from English Heritage regional offices or by e-mailing saveourstreets@english-heritage.org.uk
To support the manuals, English Heritage will be holding a series of regional events. The next event will be in Oxford on 7 September, for more information contact Ellie Fifield on:

| How Should the Ex Post Evaluation of Trunk Road Schemes be Enhanced? |
|
Identifying National Transport Needs: Research into a possible framework |
|
This report considers the feasibility of enhancing the way in which the Highways Agency and DfT evaluate the impacts of major road schemes. It concludes that it would be possible and worthwhile to enhance existing approaches, and suggests a way forward.
|
|
This is a report on an independent study into a possible way of identifying and assessing national transport needs and priorities. |

| Financial Planning Guidelines for Local Transport Plans |
|
Online TDM Encyclopaedia |
|
This is a consultation on proposed changes to the local transport capital settlement and proposals for local authority delivery reports on their first local transport plans.
|
|
The VTPI "Online TDM Encyclopaedia" is a comprehensive information resource to help identify and evaluate innovative management solutions to transport problems, available for free on our website. We continually update and expand the Encyclopaedia. We recently added the following two chapters, and updated many other chapters with new information. |

Traffic Operations and Management |
|
Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems provide convenient local public transit service on busy urban corridors, connecting major destinations such as central business districts, medical centres, campuses and entertainment centres. LRT vehicles tend to have relatively smooth and comfortable operation, easy boarding, attractive station areas, and easy-to-understand routes and schedules.
|
|
Traffic Operations (also called Transportation Systems Management or just Traffic Management) refers to facility management strategies that improve roadway system performance. Transportation professional organizations and agencies increasingly recognize the importance of Operational strategies for solving transport problems. |
