Rawcliffe to Goole (J35 to J36)

map

This contract comprised five kilometres of motorway beginning near Dobeller Lane just south of Rawcliffe and extending to an interchange on the A614 to the West of Goole.

The motorway has dual 3-lane carriageway with 3.3m hardshoulders, 1.5m verges and 4m central reserve.

The A614 Interchange at Airmyn

The Works include three side road re-alignments, one interchange and three overbridges together with drainage works including both pipe and box culverts. The earthworks are embankments of imported fill material.

Alternative designs for flexible and rigid carriageway construction were prepared for the motorway itself; side roads and interchange slip roads were of flexible construction.

The locality is below the high tide level of the River Ouse and ground water and surface water levels are influenced by tidal conditions within the flood bunds of that river. The land is drained by a system of Farmers Drains connected with Main Drains leading to outfalls at the bunds. In some cases these consist of a simple outfall with flap gates which close on the rising tide, twice daily. In other cases pumping stations were provided which work intermittently depending on the water level in the Main Drain. Sometimes a combination of the two methods used. The Internal Drainage Boards for the area carried out improvement works to cater for increased rainfall run-off from the motorway concurrently with this contract.

The Contract was awarded to Sir Alfred McAlpine & Son Ltd. of Hooton, Cheshire, at a Tender figure of £3,058,465.

The completion date of the Contract was 30th March 1975.
