Geography

The East Midland Branch celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2000. It has around 400 members and its geographical area covers the counties of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire with minor incursions into neighbouring counties.

The membership was traditionally derived from the Local Authority Highways Departments in the area and the original twelve man Committee comprised, amongst others, no less than five County Surveyors, a City Engineer and a Divisional Road Engineer. Strong links still exist between the Branch, Local Authorities and their consultants.

Branch Meetings

The Branch has a regular programme of monthly winter evening meetings which are held around the Branch area in Huntingdon, Bedford, Peterborough and Irthlingborough. A number of these are joint meetings with the Institute of Asphalt Technology, The Bedford Civil Engineering Society, The Institute of Logistics and various Branches of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

In addition, the Branch organises the prestigious annual Cambridge Seminar. In alternate years the East Anglia Branch shares the organisation. This is one of the most important events in the Institution calendar and is always well supported; this year 150 delegates attended.

Two training seminars are organised for the younger members of the Branch. These have proven very successful and the high quality of speakers has attracted a growing number of older members anxious to top up their CPD requirements.

Social Events

The main social event of the Branch is the Annual Dinner Dance held in May in Cambridge. This is supplemented by a rather less formal event held in February to avoid clashes with the multiplicity of other events around Christmas.

Two golf days are held every year in June and September. They are open to members and guests and have proved very popular and well supported events.
