A native of Lochaber in the West Highlands. Married with 3 girls.
Graduated in Civil Engineering from Strathclyde University in 1970. Studied MSc in Transportation at Newcastle University in 1976 under Professor White with research in recreational travel. Obtained an MBA in 1994 in public services management with the Open Business School.
After a short period with contractors became a graduate under training with Inverness County Council under David Hamilton and became Chartered in 1974. Been in local government in the Highlands and Islands ever since seeing through a number of LA reorganizations. Gained wide experience over this time in the design of roads, bridges and marine works. Has had the opportunity of being fully involved the upgrading of the Highland single track road and ferry network over a period of 35 years much of which has involved European Finance. Has worked closely with the Scottish Executive on upgrades to the Highland Trunk Road network.
Manager of the Highland Regional Council’s Design consultancy for 15 years and currently Head of Transport & Infrastructure in Highland Council with responsibility for Transport, Consultancy, Harbours, Lighting and Communications. Permanent Advisor to HITRANS and active member of SCOTS.
Major achievement: 14 Ben Nevis Race Certificates with a best time up and down of 1hr 49min 52sec. |
Career in the industry started in 1973 with Wm. Tawse ltd in Inverness as a trainee engineer.
I remained with the same company until 1997, through all the mergers and take-overs ,reaching the level of General Manager for the Highlands.
After all these years, I decided it was time for a change, so I resigned from Bardon and for the next 18 months I hired out my expertise{ so called} to various companies in Scotland, England and Cyprus.
In 1999 I joined Macdonald Surfacing, a small Inverness based company with an annual turnover of 800k.
I became a director in 2000 and the company changed its name in 2002 to Highland Quality Construction and is now one of the leading civils companies in the Highlands, with an annual turnover of 16mill.
