Nick Thom works part-time as a consultant for Scott Wilson and part-time as a lecturer at the University of Nottingham, where he teaches highways, airfields and railways. His principal areas of expertise are pavement design and maintenance, in particular modelling and prediction of pavement deterioration. He is actively involved in research into pavement management, highway materials, tyre-road interaction and railway trackbed performance. Past experience has included a wide range of highway and airfield pavement evaluation and design projects.
He is the author of two works on ancient history and aims to publish a book on “The Principles of Pavement Design” during 2008.

Dr Bachar Hakim is an Associate Director at Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering, responsible for the management and technical development of the road and airfield pavement sector. He is actively involved in pavement structural design, evaluation, rehabilitation techniques and construction monitoring. Bachar has developed several Operations and Maintenance (O&M) profiles and Pavement Management System (PMS) for DBFO/PFI/PPP consortia. He has carried out several pavement design reviews and failure investigations; advising on highways network privatisation, whole life costing and design and maintenance standards.
Prior to joining Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering in 1997, he completed his PhD in Pavement Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University, after a one year MSc course in Concrete Technology at the University of Dundee. His previous professional experience included more than five years working in the construction industry in the Middle East, after graduating from the University of Aleppo with a civil engineering degree. He has a broad range of experience in both structural design and supervision of civil engineering projects. Dr Hakim is listed in the 6th Edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and the 20th Edition of Who’s Who in the World and has published more than 25 technical papers.
