This website has the objective of providing a comprehensive source of information about the Council and its services, and to be as accessible as possible to users with disabilities, including users who are blind or partially sighted, or have reading difficulties.
The site allows text sizes and colours to be changed to suit user needs, all images are given alternative text descriptions, and flow charts are given long descriptions that can be read by screen readers. The site uses simple formats and plain language, and has won the Crystal Mark for Plain English. Browsealoud and Readspeaker facilities are provided. It was the first Local Authority site to be awarded the RNIB's 'See It Right' accreditation, and has the strong endorsement of the Wrexham Disability Forum. In addition, it is bilingual (Welsh and English).
When tested, the site performed as described in the award submission, and was exceptionally easy to use. During January 2005 the site received almost six million hits, and its design means that people with disabilities have equal and inclusive use of the site. It was judged to be an example of good practice that deserves to be widely recognised and copied.
