A traffic engineer in the Highways Safety & Management Group has worked with local disability groups to provide information on tactile paving for non-technical people. The information is a simple version of technical documents for engineers, and is provided in user-friendly formats (Braille, audio, raised profile drawings). This work has largely been on the initiative of the engineer, with the strong backing of the Local Authority. He has spoken to groups and explained the documents to promote awareness of the way tactile paving is used; this has been much appreciated by the Doncaster Access Group and other local groups.
The commendation is for consulting effectively with the public, particularly with people who have visual impairments, on a technical aspect of accessibility, and the way a Local Authority has supported a member of its staff who has been willing to make more than normal efforts to achieve this.
